The Gastric Bypass procedure is designed for patients who are more than 100 pounds overweight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater - or between 35 – 40 and who suffer from obesity related diseases that are known to improve with weight loss. 

The Gastric Bypass Procedure
Gastric Bypass is a bariatric surgery that has the weight loss advantage of limiting food intake, which accelerates weight loss.  During the Gastric Bypass procedure, the stomach is stabled, creating a small stomach pouch.  This new smaller stomach pouch is what causes food intake restriction.  Then, the small pouch is attached to a “Y” shaped portion of the small intestine to allow food to by-pass the larger portion of the stomach.  The Gastric Bypass procedure is generally done laparoscopically, through a small incision, which allows for faster recovery.  In some cases, an open Gastric Bypass procedure is done.
