Who May Consider Knee Replacement or Resurfacing Surgery
You may consider Total Knee Replacement or Knee Resurfacing surgery if you experience one or more of the following:
• knee pain that has failed to respond to conservative therapy (including medication, injections, and physical therapy for 6 months or more);
• Knee pain that limits or prevents activities of importance to the patient;
• Arthritis of the knee (demonstrated by X ray or MRI); or

The Total Knee Replacement Procedure
Your surgeon will remove the damaged portion of the knee joint from the bone surface and then reshape the surface to hold the artificial joint. Your new artificial joint is then cemented or otherwise affixed to the thigh bone, shin and knee cap. Together, the artificial parts form the joint, functioning and supporting your body with the help of the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
After a period of recovery and physical therapy, most patients return to full mobility within 6 to 10 weeks, walking and enjoying most physical activities (except running and jumping).
The Knee Resurfacing Procedure
In Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty, or Knee Resurfacing, only half of the knee joint is replaced. When the damage to the knee is limited to one part of the knee joint the other part of it being spared to a greater extent. The severely damaged part of the knee joint is hence replaced.
An advantage of this procedure over total knee replacement is that it’s done through minimum invasion causing far less damage to the tissue cells. Thus, you may be able to return to your normal lifestyle faster. Only you and your surgeon can decide which procedure is right for you.
