Who May Consider Lap Band Surgery

The Lap Band procedure is designed for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater - or between 35 – 40 and who suffer from obesity related diseases that are known to improve with weight loss.

The Lab Band Surgical Procedure

The Lap Band surgery is a restrictive weight loss surgery developed by leading bariatric surgeons around the world that limits the gastric capacity so the patient looses weight because of reduced food intake.  This new procedure eliminates many of the known risks associated with other obesity surgeries while offering additional benefits.  The Lap Band procedure is the only adjustable and reversible obesity surgery that does not require cutting and stapling of the stomach or gastrointestinal re-routing to bypass normal digestion.  Patient benefits include reduced surgical trauma, complications, pain, and scarring, as well as shorter hospitalization and recovery time.

The procedure, which takes between 45 minutes and two hours, involves the placement of an inflatable silicone prosthetic device around the top portion of the stomach via keyhole laparoscopic surgery.  The placement of the band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach which holds approximately 30 ml. This pouch fills with food quickly and the passage of food from the top to the bottom of the stomach is slowed.  As the upper part of the stomach believes it is full, the message to the brain is that the stomach is full and this sensation helps you to eat smaller portions and lose weight over time.

The band can be adjusted by adding or removing fluid via a small access port placed just under the skin. When fluid is introduced the band expands, placing pressure around the outside of the stomach. This decreases the size of the passage in the stomach and restricts the movement of food.  Adjustments are typically made over time until patients feel that they have arrived at the right level of restriction where optimal weight loss can be reached comfortably.
